About Kenmore Cooktop Repair
Kenmore drop-in cooktops come in gas, electric radiant and, on more recent models, induction, and the maker behind the badge varies. Frigidaire built many of them, though Whirlpool and other companies supplied some Elite versions. That matters because one symptom can trace to different parts depending on the builder, so we start with the model label on the cooktop's underside, usually visible from the base cabinet.
On radiant glass models, an element, its infinite switch or the control can fail. Older mechanical switches tend to quit individually, so the repair stays simple. The hot-surface warning light deserves prompt attention, since it is the only warning that the surface can still burn you once the element is off. Induction models depend on a cooling fan under the glass and on power boards.
Gas units pair sealed burners with spark ignition. Spills drain down onto the igniters and spark module, and grease or debris closes up burner ports, so burners click, light weakly or not at all. Some older Kenmore gas cooktops also included a modular grill section or a downdraft vent, each with its own blower, element or switch that can fail separately from the burners themselves.
Before booking, check the breaker and, on gas, the supply valve. After a boil-over, wash the burner caps and bases and let them dry. Induction needs cookware that a magnet sticks to and a fan intake with nothing stored against it. A cooktop that keeps tripping its breaker, or any smell of gas, means it should not be used until it has been checked. Share the model number when you schedule.
Diagnosis covers igniters and the spark module, gas valves, elements, switches, controls and any induction boards, plus a check that the circuit is sized correctly. We rarely need to lift the cooktop out. Repair usually wins because a replacement has to fit the existing cutout. Discontinued parts on older models can rule a repair out, and we check that first. A store protection plan is also worth checking.
Where Kenmore Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Radiant element or infinite switch failing one burner at a time
- Hot-surface warning light out on glass cooktops
- Spark igniters and burner ports fouled after boil-overs
- Cooling fan or power board failure on newer induction models
