About Bosch Cooktop Repair
The first test for a Bosch induction cooktop that will not heat a pan costs nothing: hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it does not stick firmly, the cooktop cannot heat it. Bosch drop-in cooktops come in induction, radiant electric and gas versions, and induction models make up most of our Bosch cooktop calls, so that simple check rules out a surprising number of service calls.
Under the glass of an induction model are copper coils fed by power electronics that set up a magnetic field, which heats the pan directly. The glass stays cooler than a radiant top, but the electronics produce heat of their own. A fan underneath draws air through an intake below the counter to keep the boards within range, and that cooling path is where most problems begin.
If the fan fails or a drawer full of towels blocks its intake, the cooktop protects itself by cutting power or switching off mid-cook. Power boards fail with age or after a surge, usually taking one or two zones down together, and summer lightning makes surges a real factor here. Wet or greasy touch controls register phantom presses. On gas models, igniters and spark modules are what wear.
With proper test equipment we test the cooling fan, both boards and every induction coil, and we confirm the cooktop sits on a correctly sized circuit, because an undersized one causes nuisance trips that look like a fault. On gas Bosch cooktops, the igniters, spark module and valves get tested instead. If the cooktop smells hot or trips the breaker, shut the breaker off and leave it.
A fan or a single power board is usually worth replacing on a Bosch induction cooktop. New ones are not cheap, and the counter cutout is already sized to the old unit, which narrows replacement choices. When several boards have failed on an older cooktop, the math shifts toward replacing it, and we lay out both numbers so you can decide.
Where Bosch Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Cooling fan failed or intake blocked, cutting power mid-cook
- Induction power board failure taking out paired zones
- Wet or greasy touch controls registering false presses
- Worn igniter or spark module on Bosch gas cooktops
