About Maytag Cooktop Repair

Maytag cooktops come in gas and electric, built on Whirlpool platforms. The gas versions use sealed burners with spark ignition, and many include a Power Burner, a large high-output burner for fast boils and searing. On the electric side, radiant glass is the most common surface, with ribbon elements run by infinite switches or touch controls, often a dual-size element, and sometimes a warming zone.

Each gas burner has a spark electrode, and every valve stem carries a small switch that fires the spark module when you turn the knob. Spills reach those parts easily. A wet switch stays closed and keeps all the igniters clicking after the burner is off. Grease on an electrode or in the ports gives clicking with no flame, or a flame that lights on one side only. The Power Burner is fussiest about a crooked cap.

Radiant tops fail through the element or its switch. An element that stays dark has usually burned open, while one stuck on high often means the infinite switch contacts have welded together. Touch controls can act up when water sits on the glass. Under the cooktop, terminal connections loosen with years of heat cycling, scorch and eventually stop passing power to an element.

Once the surface is cool, owners can lift off gas caps and heads, clear the ports with a pin, wipe the electrodes and let everything dry before setting caps back flat and centered. For electric models, check the breaker and wipe touch pads dry. Stop using a cracked glass top. Never work on the gas line, and if you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside.

Our technician tests the spark module, switches and electrodes, watches the flame at each burner, measures element resistance and checks switch output or the touch control. We also inspect the wiring underneath for heat damage. Switches, igniters and elements are cheap and well worth fixing. A cracked glass top or a failed touch control on an older Maytag cooktop is closer to replacement cost.

Where Maytag Cooktops Tend to Fail

  • Power Burner cap off-center, flame lighting on one side
  • Wet valve-stem spark switch, igniters clicking after shutoff
  • Radiant element burned open or infinite switch welded on high
  • Heat-loosened terminals under the glass cutting element power
