About Maytag Microwave Repair
Maytag microwaves are almost all over-the-range units, and the selling point is the vent, with stronger fans than a basic hood plus sensor cooking on most models. The hardware is Whirlpool's: a magnetron powered by a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a set of door interlock switches, a touch control, a turntable motor and a multi-speed vent motor that pulls air off the cooktop.
A completely dark Maytag microwave is often the cheapest repair in the kitchen. The interlock switches and latch hooks take a beating from daily door slams, and when a switch fails it frequently blows the main fuse, which kills the display and everything else. A thermal cut-off can do the same if a big pot on a high burner sent too much heat up into the cabinet, sometimes resetting once cool.
Hanging over the range shapes the rest. Steam and grease work their way into the touch panel until keys stick or stop responding. They also coat the grease filters until the vent fan strains, and in time they wear out the vent motor bearings, so the fan gets loud on high or barely moves air. Vented outside, the exterior hood flap can stick open in coastal humidity, letting moist air back down the duct.
Owners can check the breaker and the outlet in the cabinet above. Remove the metal grease filters from underneath and soak them in hot water with a degreaser; a clogged pair alone can make the fan roar. Listen for a clean click when the door shuts. Do not open the case, since the high-voltage capacitor can hold a charge well after the plug is out, and stop using the unit if you see sparking.
We discharge the capacitor first, then test the interlocks, fuses and cut-offs, and if it runs without heating, the magnetron, diode and transformer. We check vent motor speeds and the control, and confirm the wall plate and mounting bolts are tight, since a sagging unit strains the door. Switch, fuse, latch and vent motor repairs are worth it. A magnetron or board on an older unit usually is not.
Where Maytag Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Failed door interlock switch blowing the main fuse
- Grease and steam from the range making touch keys stick
- Thermal cut-off tripped by heat from high-output burners below
- Vent motor bearings worn, fan loud or weak on high speed
