About Maytag Oven Repair
A Maytag gas oven that glows but will not light, or lights only after a long wait, almost always has a tired igniter. The reason is how Maytag gas ovens are wired. The glow-bar igniter sits in series with the oven safety valve, and that valve opens only after enough current passes through the igniter. As the igniter ages, its resistance rises and the current falls, so it still glows orange but the valve stays shut.
Maytag ovens appear in both ranges and wall ovens on Whirlpool platforms, and the brand leans on speed. Power Preheat runs more than one element together to reach temperature quickly, and some models add convection and an air fry mode that skips preheating. Electric versions use bake and broil elements, either exposed or hidden under the floor, plus a rear fan and element on convection models.
Because Power Preheat uses several elements, a single burned-out element on an electric Maytag rarely means no heat. It shows up instead as preheat taking noticeably longer than it used to. A drifting temperature sensor gives you cookies that burn at the edges and stay soft in the middle. After a self-clean cycle, the lock motor or its switch can fail and keep the door latched long after the oven has cooled.
A few owner checks help. Confirm the breaker is fully on. On gas, light a surface burner, which proves gas is reaching the range. Then time the oven igniter: a glow lasting well over a minute with no flame points to the igniter. An oven thermometer on the center rack, read after a full preheat, shows whether the sensor is off. Leave panels and the gas valve alone on a connected gas oven.
We measure igniter current against what the valve needs, check every element's resistance, run the sensor through its range and confirm the control actually powers each element during Power Preheat. Igniters, elements and sensors are cheap, durable fixes. A control board costs more but is often still the right call on a wall oven, where a replacement may not fit the cutout without cabinet work.
Where Maytag Ovens Tend to Fail
- Aging glow-bar igniter too weak to open the gas valve
- One Power Preheat element open, preheat noticeably slower
- Temperature sensor drifting, edges burning and centers underdone
- Self-clean lock motor or switch keeping the door latched
