About Roper Oven Repair
A Roper oven is the lower half of a Whirlpool-built freestanding range, and the gas version depends on a small part with a big job. The hot-surface glow-bar igniter sits in series with the gas safety valve, so fuel flows only after the igniter heats enough to pull a specific current. As the igniter ages, its resistance rises and that current falls, even while it still glows.
That wear shows up as an oven that preheats slowly, lights late with a soft whoosh, or stays cold while the igniter glows. Delayed ignition is not something to live with, because gas collects before it lights. Electric Ropers fail in a different place. The bake element can burn through, often with a bright spot or blister visible on the coil, and the oven then heats weakly or not at all on bake.
Uneven results have a few more causes. Electronic Ropers use a temperature sensor that can drift out of range. Older Ropers with a mechanical thermostat can lose calibration, and the capillary bulb inside the cavity can be bent or damaged. A flattened door gasket lets heat escape along the top of the door. An inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle rack shows whether the dial and reality agree.
We measure igniter current and test the valve on gas models, check the element for continuity and the sensor for resistance on electric ones, and inspect the wiring and terminals at the back of the cavity, where heat loosens connections. Mechanical thermostats get a calibration check. On many newer electronic controls, the owner can also set a temperature offset through the menu described in the manual.
Igniters, elements, sensors and gaskets are modest repairs and usually worth doing on a Roper. The exception is an electronic control that dies on an aging range, especially once the part has been discontinued. And if a strong gas odor ever comes from the oven, turn it off, get everyone out of the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside before doing anything else.
Where Roper Ovens Tend to Fail
- Glow-bar igniter weakening below the current the gas valve needs
- Electric bake element burned through with a blister or break
- Temperature sensor drifting and causing uneven baking
- Mechanical thermostat or capillary bulb out of calibration on older ranges
