About Roper Cooktop Repair
Roper has sold few standalone cooktops, so nearly all the burner-top repairs we do on Roper equipment is on the top of a Roper electric range. Older built-in cooktops carrying the Roper badge use the same design: plug-in coil elements seated in drip pans, each fed through a receptacle and controlled by its own infinite switch. Because every burner is a separate circuit, a fault almost always stays at one position.
The receptacle is the weak point. Each time a coil heats and cools, its terminals expand and contract in the socket. Over years the contacts lose tension, resistance rises and the connection runs hotter, which pits the coil terminals and scorches the socket face. The burner then works only some of the time, or cuts out when a pan is moved. Spills that reach the socket speed the corrosion.
A burner that glows red even on low has a different cause. The infinite switch sets heat by switching the element on and off in pulses, and if its contacts weld closed, the burner stays at full power no matter where the knob sits. On older units the wire between switch and receptacle can also cook from years of heat at a loose terminal, until the insulation turns brittle and cracks.
With the breaker off and the coil cold, lift the suspect element and look at both ends. Blue discoloration, scorching or a melted socket face says the receptacle has to be replaced. At the visit, every element and switch gets tested, cooked wiring is replaced with high-temperature wire and crimped terminals, never a splice, and we swap a pitted coil along with its receptacle.
These are among the cheapest repairs on any appliance and almost always worth doing. Avoid lining drip pans with foil, which reflects heat back toward the receptacle. If a burner sparks, buzzes or smells of hot plastic, stop using that position until it is checked. In rentals, where coil tops see hard use, inspecting every receptacle at one visit can save a second call later.
Where Roper Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Receptacle contacts losing tension and scorching behind the drip pan
- Coil terminals pitted, so a burner cuts in and out
- Infinite switch contacts welded, so a burner glows red on every setting
- Heat-cooked wiring from switch to socket on older ranges
