About KitchenAid Cooktop Repair
KitchenAid drop-in cooktops cover four distinct designs: gas, with some five-burner models on continuous grates; electric radiant; induction; and versions with a downdraft vent built in. The induction models deserve particular attention. Copper coils under the glass are driven by electronic power boards, and those boards rely on a fan underneath the cooktop to stay within their temperature range.
When that cooling fan is blocked by items stored in the drawer or cabinet below, or simply wears out, the cooktop protects itself by cutting power or shutting off. Power boards also fail with age, and a surge can damage them outright. A zone or the whole surface going dead after a summer storm in Tampa is a familiar pattern for electronic cooktops, and it calls for board testing.
Gas models have the usual weakness: boil-overs foul the igniters and clog burner ports, and a spark module or burner switch can fail, especially if liquid reaches it. Radiant elements and controls wear with years of use. Downdraft models pull smoke down through a blower and duct in the cabinet below, and that blower motor can fail or the pop-up vent can stick up or down.
Check the breaker first, and on gas units confirm the shutoff is open. Wash and dry the caps and bases after any spill. For induction, check that a magnet sticks to your pan and clear anything stored near the fan intake under the counter. Downdraft owners should wash the grease filter on a regular schedule. Repeated breaker trips or any gas smell mean stop using the cooktop until it is checked.
We test ignition parts, gas valves and radiant elements, boards, coils and fans on induction models, and the blower and lift on downdraft units, then confirm the circuit is sized correctly. Nearly all of the work happens through the top or from the cabinet underneath. Repair usually wins because the cutout is already sized for this cooktop. Several board failures on an aging induction unit can change that.
Where KitchenAid Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Induction cooling fan blocked or worn, cutting power mid-cook
- Power board on induction models failing from a surge or age
- Gas igniters and burner ports fouled by boil-overs
- Downdraft blower failing or pop-up vent stuck
