About GE Cooktop Repair

GE builds cooktops in three technologies, gas, radiant electric and induction, across the GE, Profile and Café badges, and each fails differently. Gas units use sealed burners with spark ignition, and Profile and Café versions often add a tri-ring power burner, continuous grates and sometimes a griddle. Radiant tops use ribbon elements under glass, some with bridge or multi-ring zones. Induction grows more common.

On gas models, the usual call is a burner that sparks without lighting, or igniters that will not stop clicking. A boil-over that reaches a spark switch or soaks an electrode is the most frequent cause. Tri-ring burners add a twist: if one ring's cap is out of position after cleaning, that ring will not light. A Café griddle that heats unevenly is more often a cap or port problem than a bad valve.

Induction GE cooktops rely on coils, a power board and a cooling fan under the glass. When the fan fails, or the cabinet cutout lacks the ventilation GE specifies, heat builds up and zones shut down or stop detecting pans. Radiant tops tend to lose an element or a switch or relay, and a bridge element may work on one section but not the other. Touch controls misbehave when wet or when the lock is set.

Before a visit, let the surface cool, clean and dry caps, heads and electrodes, and seat tri-ring parts in the right order. On induction, confirm the pan is magnetic and sized for the zone. Our diagnosis covers spark modules, switches, electrodes and gas flow, element resistance and relays, and induction coils, fans and boards, plus the wiring under the unit for heat discoloration.

Igniters, switches, elements and cooling fans are easy repairs to justify. Induction power boards and replacement glass cost more, but on a Profile or Café built-in they usually still beat a new cooktop and possible countertop work. Stop using a cracked glass top right away, and leave every gas fitting, valve and connection to a professional rather than tightening anything yourself.

Where GE Cooktops Tend to Fail

  • Tri-ring burner ring not lighting after cap reassembly
  • Spill-soaked spark switch keeping igniters clicking nonstop
  • Induction zone cutting out from cooling fan or power board fault
  • One section of a radiant bridge element staying cold
