About GE Dryer Repair
A scraping sound from the front of a GE dryer, sometimes with dark marks on light clothing, usually means the front drum glides are worn through. These plastic or felt pads support the front lip of the drum on the bulkhead, and once they are gone, metal rubs metal. The drum edge can also catch fabric at that gap, which is where many of those marks come from. Glide kits are inexpensive and quick to fit.
Inside, the design is straightforward. One motor spins both the drum, through a belt and idler pulley, and the blower wheel. The back of the drum rides on rollers or a rear bearing depending on the model. Electric versions heat with an element, gas versions with an igniter, flame sensor and valve coils. Newer GE and Profile dryers add sensor drying, steam cycles, vent monitoring and SmartHQ app features.
No-heat calls usually lead to a safety part: the thermal fuse, the high-limit thermostat, or on electric units the element itself. Those parts rarely fail without help, and restricted exhaust is the common reason. Many Tampa homes run the dryer in a garage or hall closet with a long vent to the roof or an outside wall, and humid air can condense in a long duct and bind lint to its walls.
We pull the front panel and inspect glides, belt, idler and rear rollers together, since they wear at similar rates and doing them as a set saves a repeat visit. Then we test the fuse, thermostats and element, or the igniter and coils on gas models, and measure airflow at the exterior hood. On gas units an igniter that glows but never lights the burner usually points to the valve coils.
Very few GE dryers are poor candidates for repair. Glides, belts, rollers and heating parts cost a fraction of a new machine. The exception is an older dryer with a failed motor or control board, where the math gets closer. Before calling, clean the lint screen housing, look for a crushed duct behind the dryer, and on electric models check both halves of the double breaker. Any gas smell means leave first, then call.
Where GE Dryers Tend to Fail
- Front drum glides worn out, scraping and marks on clothes
- Thermal fuse or high-limit blown after vent restriction
- Belt, idler or rear rollers worn, squeal and rhythmic thump
- Gas valve coils weak, igniter glows but burner will not light
