About Kenmore Dryer Repair
Pull out a Kenmore dryer with a 110 prefix and you are looking at a Whirlpool design shared with Maytag and Roper dryers of the same years: a drum riding on rollers, a belt held by an idler pulley, an element or a gas burner, plus a thermal fuse backed by thermostats. That shared lineage keeps parts easy to find. LG-built units carry 796, and some Frigidaire front-load pairs carry 417.
The thermal fuse fails more than any other part, but it is rarely the real problem. A lint-packed or crushed vent traps heat, temperatures climb and the fuse opens, so it quits running or quits heating depending on the model. Garage laundry in many Tampa homes adds a twist: long exterior runs carry humid air, and condensation inside the duct helps lint cake onto the walls.
Mechanical wear shows up as noise. Rollers flatten and thump, the idler pulley squeals, and belts crack and slip. Electric dryers are the norm in many Tampa Bay homes, and their heating elements eventually burn through. Gas models wear their igniter and gas valve coils, and the telltale sign is a burner that lights once, shuts off as designed, then never lights a second time.
Clean the lint screen every load. Then slide the dryer forward a few inches and check the duct behind it for kinks or a flattened section, and step outside while it runs to see that the exterior flap opens. Unplug it first, and close the gas valve on a gas unit. A jumper across a blown fuse is dangerous, because it removes the protection while leaving the cause in place.
We measure airflow at the vent before touching parts, then test the fuse, cycling and high-limit thermostats, element or igniter and coils, motor, belt and rollers. A new fuse without an airflow fix only buys time. LG-built dryers get LG's diagnostic routine. On a Whirlpool-built Kenmore, nearly every one of these repairs makes sense; a dead motor on a very old unit is a closer call.
Where Kenmore Dryers Tend to Fail
- Thermal fuse opened by a lint-packed or crushed vent
- Drum rollers flattened and idler pulley squealing or thumping
- Gas valve coils too weak to relight the burner mid-cycle
- Burned-out heating element on electric Whirlpool-built models
