About Kenmore Stove Repair
On this page, stove means the cooking surface: gas burners, exposed coils or smooth glass. Coil stoves usually sit on chrome or porcelain drip bowls, and each coil plugs into a receptacle governed by an infinite switch. When a coil heats only if you wiggle it, or runs on high no matter where the knob sits, the receptacle or the switch is usually to blame rather than the coil itself.
Most Kenmore stoves came from Frigidaire, so their switches, igniters and burners follow Frigidaire designs, while some older and Elite units came from other makers. Gas models with spark ignition foul their igniters after spills, then click constantly or refuse to light. Very old Kenmore gas stoves may still have open burners and standing pilots, which we service differently from modern sealed burners.
Smoothtop Kenmore stoves hide radiant elements under ceramic glass. An element or its switch can fail, leaving one zone cold, and a dropped pan or uneven heating can crack the glass. Sugary spills that bake onto the surface can pit it, so wipe them up promptly. A cracked top should not be used at all, since spills can then reach the wiring underneath.
For gas, wait until the burners are cool, then clean and fully dry the caps and bases before setting them back flat. On coil models, push each burner firmly into its receptacle. A receptacle with blackened or scorched contacts needs replacing. Turn off the breaker or the gas supply before looking any further than the burner caps and coils.
During the visit we confirm the maker, test the spark module, switches, receptacles and elements, and check gas flow burner by burner. Most of these repairs are quick and modest. The exceptions are a cracked glass top and older stoves whose Kenmore-specific knobs or trim are no longer made. We confirm availability before recommending anything and will tell you if replacement is the better choice.
Where Kenmore Stoves Tend to Fail
- Scorched coil receptacle causing a burner that cuts in and out
- Infinite switch failure leaving a coil stuck on high
- Spark igniter fouled by spills and clicking nonstop
- Cracked glass top or burned-out radiant element on smoothtops
