About Thor Stove Repair
A slow preheat on an all-gas Thor stove is usually the oven ignition talking. The oven's gas safety valve holds closed until ignition is proven, either by a hot-surface igniter reaching its required current or, on some models, by a spark igniter paired with a flame sensor. As those parts weaken, preheats stretch out, a faint gas smell appears at startup, or the oven lights and drops out.
This is the range that built Thor's reputation: sealed burners beneath thick cast-iron grates on top, a gas oven with convection and a broiler below. The steel and cast iron almost never cause trouble. Wear concentrates in the ignition parts on top and in the oven, plus the oven thermostat or sensor, which can read away from the real cavity temperature.
An all-gas Thor still needs electricity. The igniters, the convection fan, the light and whatever electronics the model has all run on household current, so make sure the cord is in and that outlet has power. During a power outage after a storm, never attempt to light the oven with a match. Confirm the gas shutoff behind the stove is open, and reseat any burner cap that looks off-center.
A strong or lasting gas smell is different from the brief whiff at ignition. Shut the oven off, leave the home, and phone 911 or the gas company from the yard. On the cooktop, the usual complaints are burners that spark but never catch and sparking that carries on long after a spill, and many visits turn up one oven fault and one burner fault at the same time.
We check the oven igniter, safety valve and temperature control, watch a complete lighting cycle from start to flame, and then test the module, knob switches and electrodes on top. Igniters, valves, thermostats and modules are reasonable repairs, and a body this heavy makes repair the right call almost every time. Severe rust or a damaged cavity is the exception.
Where Thor Stoves Tend to Fail
- Weak oven igniter slow to let the safety valve open
- Oven lighting, then shutting off during preheat
- Knob switches sparking nonstop after a boil-over
- Oven thermostat or sensor out of step with real heat
