About Thor Refrigerator Repair
Thor built its refrigerators to match its pro-style ranges, which is why most are stainless, counter-depth, built-in French-door or column designs with a digital panel and an ice maker up in the freezer. Under the bar handles, though, the cooling is ordinary frost-free refrigeration: a compressor, a condenser down low, a cooling coil tucked behind the freezer's rear panel and a heater that clears it on a schedule.
That ordinary core is good news for diagnosis. Most no-cool calls trace to the defrost side: a failed heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control lets frost grow over the coil until no air can pass. The lower compartment loses its chill even though the freezer still feels cold. Unplugging for a day melts the ice and brings cooling back for a while, but the failed part is still there.
Electronics play a bigger role than on older mechanical fridges. Thermistors that drift feed the control board wrong readings, so it overcools one compartment and starves the other. Evaporator fans get noisy, then slow, then stop. Ice production usually fails at the water valve on the back or because the tube feeding the ice maker froze solid. The board can fail too, though less often than its sensors.
Before the visit, unplug the fridge and vacuum the grille and coil area down at the base. Then make sure nobody bumped the settings and that no containers sit against the vents inside. Thor intends these for indoor kitchens, so one parked in a Tampa garage in August is outside its design range and will run hard. For ice trouble, open the water shutoff fully and replace a stale filter.
On the visit we measure sensor resistance, check the heater for continuity, watch the fans and the compressor's run pattern, and read how frost has formed on the coil. Replacing defrost parts, a fan, a sensor, a gasket or a valve is reasonable, though some Thor boards and trim arrive slower than mainstream-brand parts. Refrigerant work on a mid-range built-in can rival the price of replacing it, which you hear first.
Where Thor Refrigerators Tend to Fail
- Failed defrost heater or thermostat letting the coil frost over
- Evaporator fan noisy, slowing or stopped
- Drifting thermistor leaving one compartment warm or overcooled
- Ice maker water valve failing or its supply tube frozen
