About Whirlpool Refrigerator Repair

A Whirlpool refrigerator that keeps the freezer frozen while the milk goes lukewarm is usually telling you about its defrost system. Nearly every model, from the plain top-freezer to the four-door French-door, cools both compartments from one evaporator hidden behind the freezer's back panel. When frost smothers that coil, the fan can't push air through the duct or damper to the fresh-food side.

The defrost circuit has three players: a heater mounted at the evaporator, a bi-metal thermostat or sensor that tells it when to quit, and either a mechanical timer or an adaptive control that decides when to run. Any one of them can fail. The giveaways are a white coat of frost on the freezer back panel and a fan that scrapes or chatters against ice it can no longer clear.

Ice production is the second big category. Water reaches the ice maker through an inlet valve with electric coils, then through a short fill tube that can freeze solid if the valve drips. A module that fills its mold but never ejects the cubes is a separate fault. Before calling, confirm the shutoff arm or switch is on, the supply valve is open and an old water filter isn't choking the flow.

Down at floor level, the compressor and condenser share a compartment cooled by a small fan. If that fan seizes, the compressor runs hot, both cabinets warm and the unit may cycle on its overload. Dust and pet hair on the coils add to the load, so unplug and clean them. A Whirlpool moved to a Tampa garage as a second fridge works harder still, since summer garage heat can exceed what many models are built for.

On the visit we measure the defrost heater and thermostat, check the control that schedules defrost, spin-test both fans and read the resistance of the water valve coils. If all of that checks out and the compressor runs without cooling, we look at the sealed system. Fans, valves and defrost parts are worthwhile repairs. A sealed-system job on an older unit often isn't, and we'll tell you that plainly.

Where Whirlpool Refrigerators Tend to Fail

  • Defrost heater or bi-metal thermostat failed, frost choking the evaporator
  • Fill tube frozen or inlet valve coil open, ice maker gets no water
  • Ice maker module fills the mold but never ejects cubes
  • Condenser fan motor seized, compressor compartment running hot
