Wiregrass Ranch, Seven Oaks and Watergrass were built with the same few refrigerator models house after house, so the faults repeat: an evaporator buried in frost because a defrost heater or sensor failed, a condenser fan that stopped, an ice maker that jams. The garage unit has it harder. A closed garage here can top 100 °F in July, past what many refrigerators are rated for, and the compressor barely rests.

Before you call, vacuum the coils behind the toe grille and listen for the condenser fan with the doors shut. A cold freezer with a warm fresh-food side usually means frost is blocking the air duct. If the unit is only a couple of years old, check the paperwork, because the maker may still cover it.

The technician tests fans, sensors, the defrost circuit and the sealed system, explains the fault and gives the price before work starts. Before You Book: Refrigerator Checks

Safe first steps for the most urgent refrigerator problems, and when to leave it to a technician.

Not Cooling: Make sure nobody has knocked the temperature dial or display to off or to a warmer setting, then take off the grille at the base and see whether dust is packed onto the condenser coil.
Freezer Not Freezing: With the freezer open, hold in the door switch and listen for the fan, and move any food that is blocking the air vent on the back wall.
Leaking Water: Close the refrigerator's water supply, dry the floor, and watch whether water comes back; if it returns with the supply off, the drain or defrost system is the more likely source.
Compressor Failure: This is not a do-it-yourself repair: the compressor sits inside the sealed refrigerant circuit. Only note whether a click repeats from the back every few minutes, and pass that along to the technician.
