About Traulsen Refrigerator Repair
On many Traulsen reach-ins, the key parts are overhead. The compressor, condenser coil, condenser fan and control sit on top of the cabinet, and the evaporator coil and fan hang inside near the top. Pass-thru models add doors on the back, and dual-temperature cabinets split into refrigerator and freezer sections with separate controls. They turn up in restaurants, hospitals and some serious home kitchens.
Putting the condenser on top keeps it away from floor dust and mop water, but it breathes the hottest air in the room. Heat and grease rise, so a Traulsen near a cooking line can foul its coil faster than owners expect, and cleaning it takes a ladder, so it gets skipped. A coated coil is the leading cause of slow pull-down and long run times, and boxes stored on top make it worse.
Inside the cabinet, an evaporator fan motor that slows or stops leaves warm pockets even while the compressor runs. The doors are heavy and see constant use, so gaskets split and hinges wear until doors stop swinging shut on their own, and a door left even slightly open keeps the system running nonstop. On pass-thru models, the side facing the warmer room tends to sweat first if a gasket is worn.
For quick owner checks, switch the unit off and clear anything stored on top. From a stable step stool, look at the condenser for lint and grease. Close each door on a strip of paper around the frame to find weak spots, and leave space between product so air can circulate. Note any alarm or reading on the control panel before the call; it helps.
On a service call we compare cabinet temperature to the control reading, check both fans, measure compressor current and look at the temperature drop across the evaporator. If the system checks out but temperatures still wander, we move to sensors and the control. Gaskets, hinges, fans, controls and coil cleaning are routine, and given what a new Traulsen costs, larger repairs often make sense too.
Where Traulsen Refrigerators Tend to Fail
- Top-mount condenser coil coated by rising grease and heat
- Evaporator fan stalling and leaving warm spots in the box
- Worn hinges keeping heavy doors from swinging shut
- Control sensor drift holding the cabinet off its setpoint
