About Traulsen Freezer Repair
A Traulsen freezer lives or dies by its defrost cycle. On a schedule set by the control, the compressor pauses, a heater warms the evaporator coil, meltwater runs out through a heated drain line, and a termination device ends defrost once the coil is clear. If any one of those steps fails, frost or ice starts building somewhere it should not, and the cabinet slowly loses temperature.
The reach-in and roll-in freezers share the overhead layout of Traulsen's refrigerators: a condensing unit on top of the cabinet and an evaporator inside. That means a freezer in a hot Tampa commercial kitchen can struggle twice. A dirty top-mounted coil raises head pressure, and a freezer with high head pressure recovers slowly after each defrost, so temperatures sag for longer every cycle.
An open defrost heater lets frost build into solid ice across the evaporator until air cannot move. A failed termination device can end defrost too early or let the heater run too long. When the drain line heater stops working, meltwater refreezes in the line, backs up and freezes again on the cabinet floor. Gaskets stiffen and crack in the cold, and every leak brings in humid air that feeds more frost.
Owners can switch the unit off and look for ice on the evaporator cover, on the floor of the cabinet or around the drain. Check that the doors close firmly and that gaskets are not split, and keep the top of the cabinet clear. If the coil is encased in ice, move product out and let it thaw on its own rather than chipping at it, which risks puncturing the coil.
Our visit is about proving each step of defrost: heater resistance, termination function, drain heater operation and whether the control starts defrost on time. Then we check the condensing unit overhead. Defrost and gasket parts are inexpensive compared with the value of a Traulsen freezer, so those repairs are nearly always worth it, and sealed-system work often still makes sense on a sound cabinet.
Where Traulsen Freezers Tend to Fail
- Open defrost heater letting ice seal the evaporator
- Termination device stopping defrost early or late
- Dead drain line heater refreezing water on the cabinet floor
- Cold-cracked gaskets letting humid kitchen air feed frost
