About Sub-Zero Freezer Repair
A Sub-Zero freezer that runs constantly while slowly warming is most often a defrost problem. When the defrost heater, its sensor or the control stops working, frost builds on the evaporator a little each day until air can no longer pass through the coil. Frost on the back wall is the giveaway. The compressor is fine; it simply cannot move cold air through a block of ice.
The freezer may be the lower drawer of an over-and-under unit, one half of a side-by-side, a dedicated integrated column or a set of undercounter drawers. On dual-refrigeration models it has its own compressor, evaporator and defrost system, completely independent of the refrigerator, and usually an automatic ice maker. A freezer fault tells us nothing about the fridge next to it, and the reverse is also true.
Evaporator fan motors are the other frequent failure, and they often get noisy for a while before they stop. Freezer drawers have rails and gaskets that wear, letting humid air in and leaving frost around the drawer front. The condenser fouls on the freezer side just as on the refrigerator side, and in a Tampa kitchen where the house runs warm during a summer outage, a dirty coil makes recovery much slower.
After a long storm outage, check the freezer temperature with a thermometer before deciding what food to keep, and give the unit time to recover once power returns. Otherwise, with power off, you can clean the condenser, check that drawers and doors close fully, and move food to a cooler if temperatures climb. A heavily iced coil may need a full defrost before testing.
We measure freezer temperature, read the frost pattern on the evaporator, and test the defrost heater, sensor, control and evaporator fan. Drawers get their rails and gaskets inspected, and we check the condenser and the sealed system if the simpler parts test good. Defrost parts, fans, gaskets and drawer hardware are worthwhile repairs, and even sealed-system work often makes sense on a Sub-Zero.
Where Sub-Zero Freezers Tend to Fail
- Defrost heater, sensor or control failure icing the coil
- Evaporator fan getting noisy, then failing outright
- Worn drawer rails or gaskets letting humid air in
- Dirty freezer-side condenser slowing recovery in hot weather
