About True Freezer Repair
One quirk of a True freezer confuses people: right after defrost, the evaporator fan stays off for a while. That is deliberate. A fan delay control waits for the coil to get cold again so the fan does not blow warm, wet air into the cabinet. If that control fails, though, the fan may never restart, and a freezer that just finished defrosting keeps warming.
Unlike True refrigerators, which defrost during the compressor's off cycle, True freezers use electric defrost. At intervals, a timer or electronic control shuts the compressor down and switches on a coil heater, and a termination control ends the heat once the coil is clear. That applies to commercial reach-ins, undercounters, glass-door ice cream merchandisers and True Residential column freezers alike.
Most freezer-only failures sit in that sequence. If the heater burns open, frost keeps building until the coil is solid ice. A timer that jams can skip defrost entirely or park in it with the heater running. A bad termination control can end defrost early. Cold makes gaskets stiff and eventually cracked, and if the perimeter heater fails, the gasket can freeze to the frame and tear when the door is pulled.
On site we measure heater resistance, watch a defrost or trigger one manually to prove the timer or control, verify how the termination and fan delay respond, and inspect the drain heater. We look at the condenser too, since a dirty coil in a hot back room or garage leaves a freezer slow to recover after every defrost. Product may need to move to another freezer during some repairs.
Before you call, power the unit down, check for thick ice around the evaporator cover, look for frozen water on the cabinet floor and in the drain, and inspect the gaskets. A coil encased in ice should be thawed with the cabinet emptied and the doors open, never chipped with a tool. Defrost parts and gaskets cost little next to the cabinet, and even sealed-system work is often reasonable on a sound True.
Where True Freezers Tend to Fail
- Jammed defrost timer skipping defrost or leaving the heater on
- Open evaporator heater letting the coil ice over
- Failed fan delay control leaving the evaporator fan idle
- Failed perimeter heater freezing the gasket to the frame
