Condos That Sit Empty for Months
Many units on Clearwater Beach belong to owners who are here only part of the year. Appliances that sit idle in a closed-up unit develop their own faults: dried-out door gaskets, a washer drum that smells of mildew, an ice maker frozen to its mold, a water valve stuck after months without use.
Before leaving for the season, shut off the water to the washer and ice maker and prop the washer door open. Leave the refrigerator running with something in it, or empty it, unplug it and prop the doors. If a neighbor or manager checks the unit, ask them to look for water on the floor.
Helene and the Barrier Island
Helene's surge set a record at Clearwater Beach in 2024, and several feet of water reached homes and businesses on the island. Nearly all of 33767 is in evacuation Zone A, and inland flooding after Milton reached apartments off Drew Street.
Do not power up anything that sat in floodwater. Have it inspected first, and expect honest advice: a soaked control board or motor is often not worth saving. On the island, salt air also corrodes exterior vent hoods and condenser coils on units kept on balconies and in parking garages.
Clearwater's Treated Water
Most of Clearwater is on the city's own water system, which pumps from Floridan aquifer wells and treats much of it by reverse osmosis, with the rest bought from Pinellas County. Some ZIPs, such as 33756 with Belleair and 33760 in east Largo, mix in other suppliers.
Whatever the source, inlet screens on washers and dishwashers still collect debris, and dishwasher spray arms still need an occasional cleaning. If a refrigerator dispenser slows down, start with the water filter before assuming the valve has failed.
From Countryside to Feather Sound
Away from the water, Clearwater is largely suburban. Countryside grew up around its mall from the 1970s, On Top of the World in 33763 dates to 1972, and Feather Sound in 33762 sits beside the airport. Many of those homes are on their second or third set of appliances.
When a twenty-year-old unit fails, we diagnose it, explain what broke and give the price before any work starts. If the repair is not worth it against the age of the machine, we say so.
