Houses, Apartments & Condos Across the Tampa Bay Area
Founded in Japan in 1912 and named after its Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil, Sharp was one of the early names in home microwaves. U.S. kitchens know it mainly for microwave drawers plus built-in, over-the-range and countertop models, and it now sells full-size refrigerators as well. We discharge the high-voltage capacitor and then test interlocks, fuses, the drawer drive and the magnetron in a fixed sequence, since several faults look the same. For Sharp refrigerators we confirm parts support for the specific model before quoting.

From a Mechanical Pencil to the Microwave
Sharp dates to 1912 in Japan, and its name comes from one of its first products, the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil. It became one of the first big names in home microwave ovens, and today Taiwan's Foxconn group holds a majority stake. American kitchens know it for countertop, over-the-range and built-in microwaves and especially the microwave drawer.
In recent years the company has also brought full-size refrigerators to North America, French-door and bottom-freezer styles among them. That line is much younger than the microwaves, which matters for parts and service history.
Inside a Microwave Drawer
The heating side of a Sharp drawer is conventional: magnetron, transformer, high-voltage capacitor and diode, managed by a control board and touch panel. The extra piece is the drive. A compact motor turns gears that roll the drawer along slides, and position switches tell the control when it is fully closed and safe to heat.
So when the drawer sticks shut or halts halfway, the cause is often a gear, motor, slide or switch rather than a dead microwave. Our first checks are on the drive motor, gears and position switches, before anyone opens the high-voltage compartment. Yanking the drawer open or shoving it closed manually is a common way to strip the gears.
High Voltage Means Hands Off
Every Sharp microwave has a capacitor that stays charged to a dangerous level even with the plug pulled. Owners can safely check the breaker, confirm nothing is jamming the door or drawer, and retire a unit that arcs or smells burnt until it is checked. The cabinet itself should stay closed.
When we open one, we discharge the capacitor first, then test interlock switches, the internal fuse that blows when a switch fails, the magnetron and the control in a set sequence. Several of these failures produce the same no-heat symptom, so the order of testing matters.
Storm Season and Sharp Electronics
Tampa's summer afternoons bring frequent lightning, and surges and brownouts are hard on touch panels and control boards. A Sharp microwave that went dark after a storm may have a blown fuse, a damaged board or both. Refrigerator controls can be affected the same way after an outage.
A surge protector on the outlet, or whole-home protection at the panel, reduces the risk but does not remove it. During long outages, unplugging the microwave and switching the refrigerator off until power is stable can spare the electronics a damaging surge when service returns.
Refrigerators and the Repair Decision
On Sharp refrigerators the complaints are familiar French-door ones: a frosted-over evaporator from a defrost failure, an ice maker or water valve that quits, fan motors and door gaskets. Because the line is young, certain parts have limited distribution, so we confirm availability before quoting.
Drawer and over-the-range models sit in cabinetry, so drive, switch, fuse and many board repairs beat replacement. A basic countertop Sharp is the exception, since anything past a fuse or switch comes close to the price of a new one.
