About Whirlpool Freezer Repair
In the Tampa Bay area a Whirlpool freezer usually lives in the garage, and that location shapes most of what goes wrong with it. A July garage can top 100 degrees, and a condenser sitting in that heat sheds it poorly, so the compressor runs longer and harder. Whirlpool labels some models garage-ready for a wider temperature range. Many older units are not, and they struggle every summer.
Whirlpool builds two kinds. Frost-free uprights tuck their evaporator behind the back panel, along with a fan and an automatic defrost heater and thermostat. Chest freezers and manual-defrost uprights cool through plates or tubing inside the cabinet walls, with no fan or defrost system. All of them rely on a compressor started by a relay and protected by an overload, and a condenser on the back or inside the cabinet skin.
On a frost-free upright, a dead defrost heater or thermostat lets the evaporator frost solid, and the cabinet slowly warms. A chest freezer that clicks every few minutes and never runs usually has a start relay or overload trying and failing to get the compressor going, though sometimes the compressor itself is the problem. A leaky gasket lets humid air in and coats food and walls with frost.
Start with power: a tripped GFCI outlet or breaker can silence a garage freezer, and a storm outage can trip one without anyone noticing. Close the lid or door on a slip of paper at several points around the seal; if it slides out with no drag, the gasket isn't sealing. Leave a few inches of air space around the cabinet. A thermometer left inside for a day gives us useful numbers to start from.
At the visit we test the defrost parts and fan on uprights, the start relay, overload and thermostat on any model, and the gasket and door or lid alignment. If the compressor won't start, we determine whether the starting components or the compressor is at fault. Relay, thermostat, defrost and gasket repairs pay off. On an older chest freezer, a sealed-system failure usually costs more than a new one.
Where Whirlpool Freezers Tend to Fail
- Upright defrost heater or thermostat failed, evaporator frosted solid
- Start relay or overload clicking, chest freezer compressor won't run
- Worn lid or door gasket admitting humid air, heavy frost
- Hot garage overwhelming the condenser on a unit not rated for it
