About Whirlpool Cooktop Repair
Whirlpool still makes built-in cooktops in several styles: gas with sealed burners, radiant electric with ribbon elements under glass, induction on some models, and old-school coil electric with plug-in elements over drip pans. Each fails in its own way, so the first thing we ask is which kind you have. Coil models remain common in rentals and older homes, and they produce the most predictable calls.
On a coil cooktop, each element plugs into a receptacle under its drip pan. Heat and spills gradually pit the receptacle contacts and the element terminals, and the result is a burner that works only when pressed down, heats in spurts or quits. A quick test: with everything off and cool, move a working element into the dead position. If the fault follows the element, replace the element; if not, the receptacle is suspect.
Gas models fire through spark electrodes fed by a spark module, triggered by a switch on each valve stem. Grease or a boil-over that gets into a switch can leave the igniters clicking after the burner lights, or even after it's turned off. A dirty electrode or a weak module produces the opposite: clicking with no flame. Pull the caps and heads, scrub the ports, wipe the electrodes, let it all dry, and set the caps back level.
Radiant tops are quieter about their problems. A ribbon element that won't heat, or one stuck on high regardless of the knob, points to the element itself or the infinite switch feeding it; touch-control models use a board instead of switches. Cracked glass means stop using the cooktop. On any electric visit we also open the junction box underneath, because burned terminal connections there cause intermittent heat.
Most of this is inexpensive to fix. Switches, receptacles, electrodes, spark modules and elements are common Whirlpool parts, and replacing a burned receptacle together with its element beats doing one alone. The decision gets harder with cracked glass or a dead touch control on an aging unit, where we compare the repair with replacement, keeping in mind that a new cooktop has to fit the existing countertop cutout.
Where Whirlpool Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Wet or greasy spark switch keeping igniters clicking
- Pitted coil receptacle, element works only when pressed down
- Radiant infinite switch failed, zone stuck on high or dead
- Burned terminal connections in the junction box, intermittent heat
