About JennAir Cooktop Repair
JennAir's founder is credited with the downdraft range, and many JennAir cooktops still pair gas, radiant or induction burners with a vent that either sits flush between the burners or rises from the counter at the back. A blower under the counter pulls air through a grease filter and pushes it through a duct to an exterior wall cap. Other JennAir cooktops have no vent and are meant to sit beneath an overhead hood.
When a downdraft stops pulling smoke, many owners assume the cooktop is failing. Usually it is not. A grease-loaded filter, a blower wheel caked with residue, a failed motor or switch, a damper stuck shut, or a crushed or disconnected duct are the common causes. Near the bay, salt air can corrode the exterior wall cap until its flap sticks. Tall pots also limit how well any downdraft captures steam.
Burner faults are a separate problem from the vent. On radiant models, an element that stays dark points to the element or its infinite switch. An induction zone that will not detect a pan usually means a control board fault once the cookware is confirmed magnetic. Gas burners that click without lighting usually have a crooked cap or wet ports. Pop-up vents add a lift motor and switches that can jam on spilled food.
With the cooktop off and the breaker or gas shut off, you can wash the downdraft filter in hot soapy water and check outside that the wall cap flap opens freely. Our visit measures airflow at the vent, tests the blower and switch, and follows the duct as far as access allows, then tests elements, switches, induction boards or gas ignition, so a vent problem is never mistaken for a cooktop fault.
Downdraft motors, filters, switches and lift mechanisms are generally worth replacing, as are ignition parts and elements. A cracked glass top on an older radiant model can cost enough that a new cooktop makes more sense, and we will say so if that is the case. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Where JennAir Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Downdraft blower motor failing or wheel clogged with grease
- Vent duct crushed or wall cap flap stuck from corrosion
- Pop-up vent lift motor or switch jammed, vent will not rise
- Induction zone not detecting a magnetic pan, board fault
