About AGA Cooktop Repair
On a traditional AGA, the cooktop is two large cast-iron hotplates, typically a hotter boiling plate and a cooler simmering plate, each under a heavy insulated lid. They draw heat from the same core as the ovens, so they are always warm. The usual complaint is slow recovery: set a cold pan down and the plate drops in temperature, then takes a long time to come back up.
Slow recovery usually means the core is running low, from a thermostat, burner or element problem, or simply because lids are left open between uses and stored heat escapes. The lids wear too. Hinges loosen and the seals underneath harden, so even a closed lid leaks heat all day. Flat-bottomed pans that make full contact with the plate also make a real difference in how fast food cooks.
AGA conventional range cookers use gas burners or induction zones that work like other modern cooktops. On gas tops, igniters and spark modules fail or click constantly, and a cap that is not seated correctly after cleaning will not light. Induction zones drop out when a control board or coil fails, often after a power surge. Confirm the control lock is off and the pan is induction-compatible first.
On a traditional model, close each lid and look for gaps along the edge; a lid that does not sit evenly is losing heat around the clock. Keep the plates clean so pans sit flat. On a gas range cooker, wash and dry the caps and seat them properly before testing a burner. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
On traditional models we check the core temperature, thermostat, heat source, lid hinges and seals. On range cookers we test ignition, burners, induction coils and controls. Lid and core heating repairs are nearly always worth doing on a traditional AGA, and cooktop repairs make sense on a costly range cooker too, though AGA-specific parts come through an import channel and can take time to arrive.
Where AGA Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Hotplate slow to recover because the core runs cool
- Insulated lid hinges loose and seals hardened
- Range cooker gas igniter or spark module failure
- Induction zone coil or board damaged by a surge
