About Amana Cooktop Repair

Amana's cooktop catalog has always been short, a handful of basic gas and electric drop-in models. Most Amana cooking happens on freestanding ranges, so a built-in Amana cooktop is a less common sight. The ones we do find follow Whirlpool's simple designs: sealed gas burners with spark igniters, or electric coil and radiant glass surfaces with each burner controlled by an infinite switch.

The strongest argument for repairing one is the hole in your countertop. Cutout dimensions vary between brands and models, so a new cooktop may not drop straight in, and modifying stone is expensive. Most Amana cooktop faults are small, such as a fouled igniter, a burned element or a failed switch. Parts for older models can take a little longer to track down, though, because the line has always been small.

On gas tops, boil-overs that reach an igniter or the spark module cause clicking that will not stop, or burners that never catch. Clogged burner ports give an uneven, lazy flame. Wipe the caps and bases, let them dry completely and reseat them flat. Electric tops wear in different places: elements burn out, coil receptacles scorch, and radiant glass models can lose their hot-surface indicator light.

One electric fault is easy to miss. The cooktop's power connection sits in a junction box inside the cabinet, and a loose or overheated splice there can make an element seem dead or intermittent. We check it on every electric visit. Please clear the cabinet below before we arrive, since most service happens by lifting the cooktop in its cutout or working from underneath with a light.

Testing covers the igniters, spark module, valves, elements, receptacles and switches. Parts come through the Whirlpool supply chain and are generally available. A cracked glass top or a failed control on an older unit can change the math, and we lay out both options side by side. A cooktop that keeps tripping its breaker, or one that smells of gas, should stay off until it has been checked.

Where Amana Cooktops Tend to Fail

  • Spark igniter fouled by boil-overs, clicking without lighting
  • Coil receptacle scorched or element burned out
  • Infinite switch failure leaving one burner stuck or dead
  • Loose junction box connection mimicking a failed element
