About Amana Microwave Repair
Amana's Radarange, sold under Raytheon ownership in the 1960s, helped put the countertop microwave into American kitchens. The microwaves sold under the name today are plain, Whirlpool-built countertop and over-the-range models. Inside, they follow the standard layout: magnetron, high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a control board, and a stack of door interlock switches checked every time the door closes.
Those interlock switches fail more than anything else. A worn switch can keep the microwave from starting at all, or blow the internal fuse the moment the door shuts. A sagging door or cracked latch hook makes it worse, because the switches stop closing in the right order. If the unit goes dead right after you close the door firmly, the switch and fuse circuit is the first place to look.
Do not open the cabinet. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after the microwave is unplugged. What you can safely do is check the latch hooks for cracks, switch the circuit off for a minute if the controls froze after an outage, and clean the grease filters on an over-the-range unit. A microwave that sparks or arcs inside should not be used again until it has been checked.
Over-the-range Amanas double as a range hood, so they add a vent fan, a fan thermostat and a cooktop light. Fan motors wear and get noisy, especially with heavy grease, and the thermostat that switches the fan on automatically over a hot cooktop can fail. If the unit runs, the turntable spins and food stays cold, the magnetron, diode or capacitor is the usual cause. Taking one off its wall plate takes two people.
We discharge the capacitor safely, then test the magnetron, diode, capacitor, transformer, interlocks, turntable motor and controls. On a countertop Amana, a magnetron or board repair often costs more than a new microwave, and we say so. Over-the-range models are a different calculation, since replacement involves the mounting and the vent, so door switches, fans and turntable motors are usually worth fixing.
Where Amana Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Door interlock switch worn, blowing the fuse as the door shuts
- Magnetron, diode or capacitor failure: runs but does not heat
- Over-the-range vent fan motor or fan thermostat worn out
- Turntable motor stalled, leaving food hot and cold in spots
