About GE Microwave Repair
GE makes more microwave formats than most brands: over-the-range units that double as vent hoods, countertop and built-in models, drawer microwaves in the Profile and Café lines, and Advantium speed-cook ovens that add halogen lamps and, on some models, convection. A standard GE microwave relies on a magnetron, high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, guarded by a set of door switches.
Door switches are the most common failure, and when one sticks it can blow the main fuse so the unit goes completely dead. A microwave that runs, lights up and turns the plate but leaves food cold usually has a failed magnetron or diode. On over-the-range models, steam rising from the cooktop can damage the touch panel over time, and the vent fan motor wears and grows loud.
Advantium ovens add halogen lamps that brown food, and a failed lamp or lamp circuit shows up as pale results and slow speed-cook times. Drawer microwaves add a motor, gears and switches that open and close the drawer, and these can jam if something blocks the track. Uneven heating on some built-ins comes from a stalled turntable motor or a failed stirrer that spreads energy through the cavity.
A microwave capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after the plug is pulled, so owners should stop at the outlet, the breaker, the grease filters and a check that the door latches firmly. If you see arcing inside, stop using it. We discharge the high-voltage circuit first, then test the magnetron, diode, capacitor, transformer, switches and fuse, plus the lamps or drawer motor where present.
Over-the-range, drawer and Advantium units are usually worth repairing because a replacement involves mounting work or a built-in fit. A countertop model with a failed magnetron or board often costs more to fix than to replace. After any work on an over-the-range unit we check the wall bracket and top bolts, since they carry the full weight of the microwave above the cooktop.
Where GE Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Stuck door switch blowing the main fuse, unit totally dead
- Magnetron or diode failed, runs normally but does not heat
- Advantium halogen lamp out, weak browning and slow cooking
- Drawer microwave motor or track jammed, drawer will not open
