About GE Dishwasher Repair
Every GE dishwasher, from a basic built-in to a Profile or Café, splits the job between two pumps: a circulation pump that pushes water through the spray arms and a separate drain pump that empties the tub. A heater in the wash path or under the tub raises water temperature and helps drying. Older GE models chopped food with a hard-food disposer, while most newer ones rely on removable filters the owner rinses.
That two-pump layout explains the most common GE complaint. When the circulation pump weakens, the dishwasher still fills and still drains, so it seems to run normally, but water barely leaves the spray arms. Dishes come out with food baked on, or the machine hums through the wash with no spray at all. A failed drain pump gives the opposite picture: reasonably clean dishes sitting in dirty water.
Hard water adds a second cause of weak washing in many Tampa kitchens. Mineral scale narrows spray arm holes and coats the filter, and a Profile model with bottle jets or a steam pre-wash has more small openings to clog. Pull the lower rack, rinse the filters, pop the spray arms off and clear the holes before assuming a part has failed. A white film on glassware is often scale, not a broken heater.
Leaks on GE units come from a worn door gasket, a cracked sump or a loose hose under the tub, and now and then from suds made by hand-dish soap. If a cycle will not start at all, the door latch or its switch is a common cause. Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks, and if a garbage disposer was just installed, confirm the knockout plug was removed.
On a visit we test both pumps, the inlet valve and heater, the latch and switches, and look under the tub with the kick plate off. For poor cleaning we also measure incoming water temperature. Pumps, valves, latches and seals are reasonable repairs. A circulation pump or control board on an older entry-level model can approach replacement cost, and you hear that before we start.
Where GE Dishwashers Tend to Fail
- Circulation pump weak, tub fills but spray arms barely turn
- Drain pump jammed or failed, dirty water left in the tub
- Door gasket or cracked sump dripping under the cabinet
- Door latch switch failed, cycle will not start
