About Thermador Dishwasher Repair
Under the stainless, a Thermador dishwasher such as a Star Sapphire shares its BSH engineering with Bosch. That matters, because the platform has a leak protection system: a float that sits in the base pan and shuts the machine down when water reaches it. Many owners call because the dishwasher stopped mid-cycle or refuses to start, and that float is very often the reason.
The water in the base has to come from somewhere. Loose hose connections, a tired door gasket, a cracked hub on a spray arm, and oversudsing from hand dish soap are the usual sources. Tipping the machine to dump the water hides the leak without fixing it, so we find the source, dry the pan and reset the float instead. Next on the list are drain faults, usually a filter full of debris or a pump jammed by glass.
Heat is the other known weak point. Here the heater is part of the circulation pump, a flow-through assembly, and when it fails the water stays cool and dishes come out wet. Many Thermador models dry with StarDry, which uses zeolite minerals to absorb moisture, so a drying complaint needs careful separation between a heater fault and a loading or rinse aid issue.
We pull stored fault codes, run both pumps, measure heater resistance, and trace any base leak to its origin. You can help by twisting out the cylindrical filter in the base and rinsing it, checking the small drain pump cover underneath for glass, and using only automatic dishwasher detergent. Where water leaves scale, keeping the rinse aid filled helps too.
On a Thermador, pumps, heaters, hinge springs and seals are all sensible fixes. Panel-ready doors carry a heavy custom front, and weakened hinge springs let the door drop open hard; those springs are a modest fix. On an older machine with a failing control and pump at the same time, we will tell you plainly if replacement is the wiser use of your money.
Where Thermador Dishwashers Tend to Fail
- Leak from a hose, seal or excess suds tripping the base float
- Circulation pump heater failing so wash water never warms
- Drain pump impeller jammed under the filter cover
- Hinge springs weakened by heavy custom door panels
