About Smeg Dishwasher Repair
Most Smeg dishwashers sold here are 24-inch built-in units, and many are fully integrated behind a cabinet panel so the kitchen looks unbroken. Inside is a European layout: a stainless tub, a fine filter assembly in the sump, a circulation pump with a heating element, a separate drain pump, and on many models an anti-flood tray in the base with a float switch that shuts the machine down if water collects there.
That float switch is behind a call that confuses many owners. The dishwasher will not start, or it runs the drain pump over and over, and nothing seems wrong inside the tub. Usually water has reached the base tray from a small leak, a cracked hose or a flood of suds from the wrong detergent. The leak has to be found and fixed and the tray dried before the machine will run normally again.
The next most common faults are mechanical. Broken glass, a fruit pit or a bottle cap can jam the drain pump. A neglected filter blocks drainage and spoils wash results. A heater or heating circuit can stop warming the water, leaving dishes cold and wet at the end. And on integrated models, a heavy decorative panel gradually wears the door springs and hinges until the door drops open.
Before you book, turn the machine off and pull the bottom filter. Rinse it and look into the sump for debris. Make sure the drain hose behind the cabinet is not kinked, and if the dishwasher drains through a disposal, confirm the knockout plug was removed. In areas with hard water, scale can also gather on the filter and spray arms. Use dishwasher detergent only.
We test the drain pump, inlet valve, heating element, float switch and door switch, and we look for the actual source of any water in the base instead of just drying it. Integrated panels are handled carefully. Pumps, valves, heaters, seals and door springs are reasonable repairs on a Smeg; a failed control board on an older machine is when we talk honestly about replacement.
Where Smeg Dishwashers Tend to Fail
- Anti-flood float switch tripped by water in the base tray
- Drain pump jammed by glass, pits or caps in the sump
- Heating circuit failure leaving dishes cold and wet
- Door springs worn out by heavy integrated cabinet panels
