About Smeg Cooktop Repair
Nonstop clicking from a Smeg gas cooktop almost always starts with a spill. Every burner's spark is triggered by a small switch behind its knob, and all of them share one spark module. When a boil-over seeps down around a knob and reaches that switch, the module keeps firing even with the knob off. Drying the area sometimes stops it; when it does not, the switch needs replacing.
Smeg sells built-in cooktops in gas, induction and ceramic-glass electric versions, many styled to match its ranges and ovens. Many of the gas hobs carry flame-failure protection: a thermocouple beside each burner that holds the gas valve open only while a flame is heating it. Induction models depend on a power board, cooling fans and coil sensors beneath the glass.
That flame-failure design explains a second complaint: a burner that lights but goes out the moment you let go of the knob. You have to hold the knob in for several seconds so the thermocouple warms up. If it still drops out after a proper hold, the thermocouple is dirty, out of position or failed. It is a safety part and should be replaced, never bypassed. Burners that will not light often just have a misplaced cap.
On induction models, zones that will not detect a pan or that shut down with an error usually come back to a cooling fan, a sensor or the power board. Keep the vents below the cooktop clear and do not stuff the drawer underneath with towels. Lightning-season surges are hard on induction electronics in Tampa, so we check the supply as well as the board itself.
Before calling, shut off the gas valve or breaker, lift and dry the caps and igniters, and reseat the caps flat in their correct positions. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility. Igniter switches, spark modules and thermocouples are inexpensive compared with a new cooktop. A cracked glass top or a failed power board on an older unit calls for a frank cost comparison.
Where Smeg Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Spill-soaked igniter switches causing constant clicking
- Flame-failure thermocouple letting burners die on release
- Out-of-place burner caps preventing clean ignition
- Induction power board or cooling fan shutting down zones
