About Thermador Cooktop Repair
Thermador gas cooktops are built around the Star burner, a five-pointed design that stretches the flame perimeter for more even heat across the pan. Many add ExtraLow, a mode that switches the flame off and back on to hold a very gentle simmer. On the electric side there are radiant models and induction tops, among them Freedom induction, which senses a pan wherever it is placed on the glass.
Owners often worry about clicking. On ExtraLow, the burner is meant to cycle, and the igniter clicks each time it relights, which is normal. Clicking that continues at other settings or with every knob off is different: a switch or igniter has gotten wet, often after a boilover, or is failing. One spark module feeds every igniter, so one wet switch can make the whole top click.
Ignition failures lead the repair list: igniters with hairline cracks, spark modules that have died, and burners that refuse to light. Star burner caps must sit properly on their bases, and a cap that is off by a few degrees gives an uneven flame. Yellow or lifting flames also prompt us to inspect the orifices and make sure the cooktop's setup matches the gas it is actually connected to, natural gas or propane.
On the induction side, the usual suspects are coils, sensors, cooling fans and power boards, and Freedom induction has denser electronics that need careful, step-by-step testing. Before a visit, dry and reseat Star caps with all burners off, or reset the breaker and check pans with a magnet on induction models. Any gas smell means leaving the home and calling the gas utility.
Ignition parts on a Thermador cooktop are fair repairs. An induction power board is a bigger bill, but they generally still beat replacing the cooktop and recutting the counter, especially on stone. Broken induction glass is the exception, since the replacement surface is expensive, and we help you weigh that one carefully against a new unit before ordering anything.
Where Thermador Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Spark module or igniter failure keeping Star burners unlit
- Wet or failing ignition switch causing constant clicking
- Misaligned Star burner caps producing an uneven flame
- Freedom induction shutting down from board or cooling fan faults
