About Hotpoint Cooktop Repair
A Hotpoint coil cooktop gives owners a test they can do themselves. With the breaker off, unplug a burner that is not heating and trade it with a working element of the same size. If the problem moves with the element, the element is bad. If it stays in the same spot, the receptacle, wiring or switch is at fault. Few cooktops make diagnosis this direct.
Most Hotpoint built-in cooktops are electric. Some use plug-in coils, others radiant elements under glass-ceramic, and every burner has an infinite switch that pulses power to hold the heat you set. There is little electronics to go wrong, so a fault usually affects one burner and can be traced to one part without much guesswork.
On coil models, the most common failure is a receptacle that has burned or terminals that have corroded, leaving a burner that heats only when wiggled. The poor connection creates heat and gets worse fast. Scorch marks on the receptacle mean that burner should stay unplugged until it is repaired. An element that sat in a burned receptacle usually has pitted terminals and should be replaced with it.
When a burner runs full blast no matter where the knob is, it usually has an infinite switch with welded contacts, and that is not safe to keep using. On radiant glass tops, a single element can break internally while the rest work normally, and the hot-surface light can quit on its own. A cracked glass top should not be used at all, since spills can reach live wiring underneath.
We meter each element, receptacle and switch and check the terminal block, where a loose connection causes heat damage over time. Elements, switches and receptacles are cheap parts on a Hotpoint, so fixing the cooktop is usually the obvious choice. A shattered glass top on an older unit is the main case where buying new may be the more sensible route.
Where Hotpoint Cooktops Tend to Fail
- Burned coil receptacle giving intermittent heat
- Welded infinite switch contacts holding a burner on high
- Radiant element broken internally under the glass
- Corroded terminals arcing where the coil plugs in
