About Hotpoint Oven Repair
Pull out the rack on an electric Hotpoint oven that will not bake and you can sometimes see the problem: a bake element with a blister, a split or a bright burn spot. A Hotpoint oven nearly always sits in the bottom of a freestanding range, with the bake element on or under the cavity floor, the broil element overhead, a temperature sensor and a simple control.
Gas Hotpoint ovens use a glow-bar igniter instead of a spark. The gas safety valve stays closed until the igniter is hot enough to pull a set current. As it ages, it can glow bright orange without reaching that current, so the valve stays shut. The result is a preheat that gets longer each month, then an oven that never lights. Measuring current draw separates a weak igniter from a valve fault.
Ovens that heat but run noticeably hot or cool usually have a temperature sensor out of specification or a poor connection at its plug. An inexpensive oven thermometer on the center rack is a good way to confirm drift before you call. Worn door hinges and a flattened door gasket also let heat escape, which makes bake times unpredictable even with healthy elements.
Switch off the breaker before you inspect the elements up close, and note whether broil works when bake does not, since that narrows things down. If a gas oven smells of gas, leave and call the utility or 911 from outside instead of trying to light it. We test elements for continuity, check sensor resistance, measure igniter current and inspect the terminals at the back, which heat can brown and loosen.
An element, igniter or sensor is a modest repair, and the oven cavity on a Hotpoint rarely wears out, so fixing it usually makes sense. The exception is a failed electronic control on an older range, or a model whose parts have been discontinued; at that point the board can approach the cost of a new range, and we will tell you so.
Where Hotpoint Ovens Tend to Fail
- Bake element split or blistered, oven stays cold
- Aging glow-bar igniter glowing but never opening the gas valve
- Temperature sensor out of spec, baking hot or cool
- Loose door hinges or flat gasket letting heat escape
