About GE Oven Repair

GE oven controls report faults with F-codes, and on many models the meanings are well established. F3 and F4 point to the oven temperature sensor circuit being open or shorted, F2 means the control saw an overheat, and F9 involves the self-clean door lock. A code narrows the search but does not finish it: a chafed wire can throw the same F3 that a failed sensor does, so we test both.

Those controls run ovens across a wide spread of products: freestanding GE, Profile and Café ranges, single and double wall ovens, and combination wall ovens that put an Advantium speed-cook cavity above a conventional oven. Electric ovens use bake and broil elements, and convection models add a rear fan and sometimes a third element. Gas ovens light with a hot-surface igniter or, on some models, spark.

Outside the coded faults, the repeat failures are a bake element that burns open, a gas igniter that glows but is too weak to open the valve, a door lock stuck shut after self-clean, and a convection fan that stops turning. Uneven baking usually traces to the sensor or the fan rather than the element. Set an oven thermometer on the center rack before deciding the oven runs hot or cold.

Advantium combination units deserve extra care. The upper cavity uses halogen lamps along with microwave parts, and both cavities draw from one supply. We test each cavity and check how power is shared so a fault in one is not missed while we fix the other. Before calling, write down any F-code, try a breaker reset for a few minutes, and check that Sabbath mode or the control lock is not active.

Sensors, elements, igniters and lock assemblies are modest, worthwhile repairs on a GE. A new control board costs more, especially on a wall oven or Café range, but it usually beats removing a built-in and finding a new one to fit the cutout. Please do not force a locked door or try to bypass the lock; it is a safety interlock on a cavity that can be extremely hot.

Where GE Ovens Tend to Fail

  • F3 or F4 code from an open or shorted oven sensor circuit
  • F9 door lock fault, often around a self-clean cycle
  • Bake element burned open or gas igniter too weak to light
  • Convection fan motor stopped, baking uneven front to back
