About GE Stove Repair

The word stove covers a lot of ground on a GE range. Rental units and starter homes often have coil elements in drip bowls, mid-range models have smooth radiant glass, and gas stoves use sealed burners with spark ignition. Profile and Café ranges add high-output and tri-ring burners and, on some, a center griddle. A GE stove repair can mean a coil receptacle one day and a spark module the next.

Coil-top GE stoves have a simple weak point: the receptacle the element plugs into. Over time the terminals pit and burn, contact loosens, and the element heats intermittently or sparks. Swap a known-good element into the dead position. If the problem stays with the position, the receptacle or wiring is at fault. An element that stays on high regardless of the knob means the infinite switch contacts have welded.

Gas GE stoves bring ignition complaints. A burner clicks but will not light, lights on only part of the ring, or keeps clicking after it is off. Spilled food in the ports, a wet electrode or a cap that is not sitting square causes most of these. When several burners are slow to catch at once, a shared spark module becomes more likely than any single burner.

Landlords and property managers with GE stoves in rentals around USF tend to see these coil and ignition faults, and the fixes are usually quick. Before a visit, let the surface cool, clean and dry caps and electrodes, and on electric models confirm both breaker legs are on. Do not keep using a coil position that sparks, as the wiring behind it can be damaged, and stop using any cracked glass top.

We test spark switches and the module, check flame quality and gas flow, measure element resistance, test infinite switches, and inspect receptacles and wiring for heat damage. Tri-ring and griddle burners on Profile and Café ranges get checked one at a time. Nearly all of these are inexpensive repairs; new glass on an old basic range is the main case where a replacement range may make more sense.

Where GE Stoves Tend to Fail

  • Wet or dirty electrode, burner clicks without catching
  • Burned coil receptacle, element heating on and off
  • Welded infinite switch, element stuck on high
  • Spark module weakening, several burners slow to light
