About Maytag Stove Repair
Ask most owners about their Maytag stove and they point at the burners, not the oven, so this page covers the top of a Maytag range. On gas models that means the Power Burner, a simmer burner and heavy continuous grates. Electric models are split: radiant glass with dual-size elements on most current units, and basic coil tops with chrome drip bowls on entry-level ones.
Coil tops have a failure the glass models do not. The receptacle that a coil element plugs into pits and burns over time, and once it does the element only works if you wiggle it. Swap a known-good coil into that spot: if the new coil also acts up, the receptacle is the problem. We replace the receptacle and the element together, because a scorched terminal damages a new part quickly.
Gas stoves are about ignition and flame. A Power Burner that lights slowly or burns lopsided is often fighting a cap that has moved a few millimeters, or ports clogged by a boil-over. A spill that soaks a spark switch on a valve stem can keep every igniter ticking long after the knob is off. On radiant tops, elements eventually burn open, and an infinite switch can weld shut and leave an element on full.
Clean what you can before calling. With the stove cool and knobs off, lift the grates and caps, scrub the burner heads, open blocked ports with a straight pin rather than a toothpick, and let everything dry. Check that both halves of the range breaker are on. A cracked glass top should not be used. Older homes may still have a Maytag Gemini or an earlier Maytag-built range; those are often fixable too.
We test the spark module and each valve switch, check the flame pattern and gas supply at the Power Burner, measure elements and check switch output. On Gemini and other older Maytag ranges we look up the part before quoting so you know it exists. Burners, igniters, switches, receptacles and elements all cost far less than a new range. A new glass top for an older basic model is the main exception.
Where Maytag Stoves Tend to Fail
- Coil receptacle burned or pitted, element works only when wiggled
- Power Burner ports clogged by boil-over, flame slow and lopsided
- Spill-soaked valve-stem switch keeping igniters ticking
- Infinite switch welded closed, radiant element stuck on full
