About Maytag Washer Repair
Maytag built its name on washing machines, and a lot of homes still run one. The newer ones are Whirlpool platform machines: top-loaders with either an agitator or a low-profile impeller, the Bravos line among them, and front-loaders with a door boot and drain filter. Pre-2006 Maytag-built washers, including the Neptune front-loaders, are a separate design with separate parts.
On the top-loaders, the lid lock is the part we replace most. It holds the lid shut during agitation and spin, and when its small motor or switch fails, the washer stalls and posts a lid lock error. The drive side comes next. A worn belt or a split coupling between motor and transmission gives you a machine that fills and drains normally but barely agitates or will not reach full spin speed.
Front-loaders fail differently. Their drain filter collects hair ties and coins, and the rubber boot holds water in its folds, which turns to mildew quickly in a humid garage or closet. Across both styles, worn suspension springs or dampers let the tub bang against the cabinet on spin. Homes on a private well may also see slow fills when sediment packs the inlet screens behind the hoses.
Before calling, unplug the washer and check that the lid closes all the way with nothing caught near the lock. Make sure both faucets are open and the hoses are not kinked. On a front-loader, the drain filter behind the lower panel can be cleared over a shallow pan. Running a medium load spread evenly around the tub also helps rule out a simple out-of-balance stop.
At the machine we test the lock and its wiring, look over the belt or coupling, the shifter and gearcase, and check the pump, inlet valves and suspension. Lid locks, belts, couplings and pumps are sensible repairs. A failed gearcase or tub bearing on an older washer is a bigger decision, and on Neptune and other legacy models we check parts before quoting anything.
Where Maytag Washers Tend to Fail
- Lid lock motor or switch failed, top-loader stalls with an error
- Worn belt or split coupling, weak agitation and slow spin
- Front-load drain filter packed with coins, hair ties and lint
- Suspension springs or dampers worn, tub banging during spin
