About Speed Queen Washer Repair
Speed Queen builds its home washers in Ripon, Wisconsin. The maker, Alliance Laundry Systems, also supplies laundromats, and the residential machines show it. The traditional top-loader pairs an agitator with a belt-driven transmission and mechanical dials, while newer top-load models use electronic controls. Front-load versions have stainless drums, steel cabinets and heavy-duty bearings.
These machines are designed to be taken apart, so most failures are worn parts rather than puzzles. A top-loader that fills and then sits there, refusing to agitate or spin, usually has one of four problems: a lid switch or lid lock that no longer reports a closed lid, a belt that has stretched or frayed, a worn transmission or clutch, or on dial models a failed timer.
Drain pumps on every style collect socks, coins and hair ties. Fill valves grow sluggish with age, and homes on wells in Lutz, Odessa or Plant City can see sediment block the valve screens early. Front-loaders also suffer door lock faults and gasket mildew, because a door left shut in a muggy Tampa garage traps moisture in the folds. Propping the door open between loads makes a real difference.
Unplug the machine first. If a top-loader refuses to spin, push down on the lid and restart it, since a sticky lid may not trip the switch. Straighten any kinks in the drain hose, and if filling is slow, shut the water off and clean the screens where the hoses attach. Front-load owners can empty the pump filter into a low pan. We then test the lid circuit, belt, motor, pump, valves and controls.
Repairing a Speed Queen is usually the obvious choice. Belts, pumps, valves and lid switches are short jobs, and transmission or bearing work is still reasonable on a washer engineered to run for many years. About the only thing that changes our advice is a cabinet badly rusted after years in a damp garage, which we see more often in homes near the bay.
Where Speed Queen Washers Tend to Fail
- Lid switch or lock no longer reporting a closed lid
- Stretched or frayed belt on belt-drive top-loaders
- Socks, coins or hair ties stuck in the drain pump
- Mildewed front-load gasket in a muggy garage laundry
