About Frigidaire Washer Repair

Three kinds of Frigidaire washers come through our schedule: front-loaders, top-loaders with an agitator or impeller, and the tall laundry centers that stack a washer and dryer in a single cabinet for apartments and townhomes. Front-loaders generate most of the calls, largely because a sealed drum, a rubber door boot and an electronic door lock give moisture and lint more places to cause trouble.

Odor is the complaint we hear first. The folded rubber boot around a front-load door holds water and detergent film, and in a humid laundry room or garage it can grow mildew within weeks if the door stays shut between loads. Too much detergent, or soap that is not HE rated, speeds the buildup. That residue is more than a smell problem, since it also coats the path to the drain pump.

The drain pump is the next weak spot. Lint, coins and small socks collect at its filter, and a machine that stops with water in the drum often has nothing worse than a clog. Door locks fail and keep the cycle from starting at all. As the years pass, drum bearings and shocks wear, so spin gets loud and the cabinet shakes. Top-loaders lean toward lid switch, pump and suspension faults instead.

To diagnose, we run a service test where the model allows it, then check the pump, lock, motor and control, and turn the drum by hand to feel for bearing roughness. A laundry center adds a step, because the washer and dryer share one cabinet and the whole unit usually has to come out from the wall. We plan that move before starting so the floor and hookups are protected.

Pump, lock and boot replacements are usually worth doing on a Frigidaire washer. Bearings are the dividing line, since on an older front-loader the tub work can run close to the price of a new machine, and we say that up front. Owners can help a lot between visits by leaving the door ajar, wiping the boot, cleaning the dispenser drawer and emptying the front drain filter if the model has one.

Where Frigidaire Washers Tend to Fail

  • Mildew and odor in the front-load door boot in humid laundry spaces
  • Drain pump filter clogged with lint, coins or socks, so water stays in the drum
  • Door lock failure that keeps the wash cycle from starting
  • Worn drum bearings or shocks causing a loud, shaking spin
