About LG Washer Repair
Grinding or a jet-engine roar at high spin, getting louder month by month, is the LG washer complaint that costs the most. It almost always means the rear tub bearings, and on LG that is a big job because the outer tub has to come out. Catching it early matters: a bearing that keeps running dry lets the drum wobble and can damage the tub and the rotor behind it.
That rotor is the heart of every LG washer, top-load or front-load. LG uses direct drive, with a permanent-magnet rotor bolted straight to the drum shaft and a stator fixed behind it. A hall-effect position sensor tells the control where the rotor is. No belt, pulley or transmission is involved, so spin and agitation faults trace to the motor, its sensor, the bearings or the board.
The display usually points us in the right direction. OE is a drain that took too long, typically a clogged pump filter or a weak drain pump. IE is a slow fill from a closed valve or debris in the inlet screens. UE says the washer gave up trying to balance the load. LE, a locked motor, can be as simple as an overstuffed drum or as specific as a failed position sensor or stator.
Before the visit, unplug the machine and, on a front-loader, open the small lower access door, drain the leftover water into a shallow pan and clean the pump filter. Check the inlet screens at the hose connections. In a hot garage laundry, wipe the door boot and leave the door cracked between loads, since Tampa humidity turns a damp gasket into mildew quickly.
We pull the stored code history, measure the stator windings and the position sensor, check drain pump and valve resistance, and turn the drum by hand to feel the bearings. On LE codes we inspect the rotor magnets and the harness, which can rub on the tub. Pumps, valves, sensors and stators are good repairs; bearings on an older washer get an honest look against replacement.
Where LG Washers Tend to Fail
- Rear tub bearings failing, roaring or grinding at high spin
- Rotor position sensor or stator fault behind LE locked-motor codes
- Pump filter clogged or drain pump weak, OE code with water left in drum
- Inlet screens plugged with sediment, IE slow-fill errors
