About Kenmore Washer Repair

A Kenmore top-loader that fills and drains but never agitates is a classic, and on the older Whirlpool direct-drive design the answer is usually the drive coupler. That rubber-and-plastic link between motor and transmission is meant to be the part that gives out, sparing the costlier parts behind it. It is an inexpensive fix, and the washers it sits in are generally still worth keeping.

Not every Kenmore washer is built that way. Model numbers starting with 110 are generally Whirlpool, top-load or front-load. A 796 prefix indicates LG, which supplied many front-load Kenmore Elite machines, and 417 points to Frigidaire front-loaders. Sears often sold laundry as a matched pair, so the matching dryer frequently shares its maker and prefix, which helps us plan parts.

Each maker has its own weak spots. Newer Whirlpool-built top-loaders run into lid switch, shifter and pump failures. LG-built front-loaders grow mildew in the door boot, clog their drain pumps and, with age, develop bearing noise; they also flag unbalanced loads and slow drains often. Frigidaire front-loaders share most front-load complaints. Error codes differ by maker, so one code can mean different things.

The model tag is usually under the lid or around the door opening. On front-loaders, prop the door open after each wash and wipe the boot and dispenser; in a humid Tampa garage, mildew moves in fast when they stay shut. If your model has a drain filter, unplug the machine and lay towels down before opening it. On a top-loader, never defeat the lid switch to make it spin.

We confirm the maker, then put the washer into its matching service test. On a Whirlpool-built top-loader that means checking the pump, motor, lid switch, and coupler or shifter; on an LG-built front-loader, the door lock, drain pump, control and motor. Whirlpool top-load parts remain easy to find. Worn bearings on an older front-loader often cost too much of a new machine to justify.

Where Kenmore Washers Tend to Fail

  • Worn drive coupler: washer fills and drains but won't agitate or spin
  • Lid switch or shifter faults on newer Whirlpool-built top-loaders
  • Drain pump clogging on LG-built Kenmore Elite front-loaders
  • Musty door boot and growing bearing noise on aging front-loaders
