About Kenmore Refrigerator Repair
A Kenmore refrigerator is really another company's refrigerator wearing a Sears badge, and the three digits in front of the decimal point on the model number tell us whose. A 106 prefix is generally Whirlpool, 253 is Frigidaire and 795 is LG. That one clue decides which fan motor, defrost parts and ice maker we expect behind the panels, and which diagnostic approach fits the job.
The faults split along those lines. Whirlpool-built units tend toward defrost failures, evaporator fan trouble and ice makers that quit. Frigidaire-built models often have an evaporator fan motor that squeals for weeks before it stops, defrost heater or timer failures, and gaskets that go stiff. On Frigidaire side-by-sides the defrost drain can also clog, which shows up as water pooling beneath the crispers.
LG-built Kenmore Elite models are a different animal. They run electronic controls, many use LG's linear compressor, and the ice maker is prone to freezing solid. Older Whirlpool-built 106 units, by contrast, may still have a mechanical defrost timer, and when that timer sticks the fridge either sits in defrost or never enters it. That mimics a dead compressor but costs far less to fix.
Before the visit, read the model number from the tag on the fresh-food compartment wall and include it when you book. Vacuum the condenser coils, check the freezer's rear panel for a thick frost layer and confirm the doors seal. A Kenmore moved out to a Tampa garage works much harder in summer than it did in the kitchen, so tell us where it sits. Cut power before removing any cover.
Fan motors, defrost parts, gaskets and ice makers are normally worth replacing on any of these. A sealed-system failure is different: on an older top-freezer it can cost more than the fridge is worth, and we say so plainly. If an LG-built Elite turns out to have a compressor fault, ask whether your unit still has extended coverage on the compressor before you pay for that repair yourself.
Where Kenmore Refrigerators Tend to Fail
- Squealing or dead evaporator fan motor on Frigidaire-built 253 units
- Mechanical defrost timer sticking on older Whirlpool-built 106 models
- Ice maker freezing solid on LG-built Kenmore Elite refrigerators
- Clogged defrost drain pooling water under side-by-side crispers
