About Kenmore Oven Repair
Most Kenmore ovens are the lower half of a range Frigidaire built, recognizable by a 790 prefix behind the storage drawer, though some Kenmore wall ovens and ranges came from other makers. Electric versions bake and broil with exposed elements. Gas versions rely on a hot-surface igniter that must draw enough current to open the gas valve, and that requirement explains the most common failure.
An aging Frigidaire-built igniter still glows, so owners assume it works. As it weakens, though, it draws less current, and the safety valve opens late or never opens at all. The oven then takes far too long to preheat or never lights. On electric ovens the equivalent is an element that splits, or a broil element glowing along only part of its length, which is a sign it is close to failing.
Older Kenmore ranges relied on a mechanical clock and thermostat. Newer ones moved to electronic boards and touch panels, plus a temperature sensor that can drift and make the oven run hot or cool. Those boards are vulnerable to surges, a real concern during Tampa's summer lightning season. Self-clean is hard on aging sensors, door locks and boards too, so a cleaning cycle often exposes a weak part.
Check the breaker first, and on gas models confirm the shutoff valve behind the range is open. Look at the elements for blisters or breaks. When the igniter glows but the burner never lights, it is the likely culprit. A gas smell is a different matter: get outside and call the gas utility or 911 from there. Share the model number when you book so we can bring the right part.
We measure igniter current, check the gas valve, test the elements and sensor, and look at the control board, then confirm calibration. On a wall oven, getting to the wiring may mean easing the unit partway out. Igniters, sensors and elements cost little and are well worth replacing. Some older Kenmore boards are discontinued, and when that blocks a repair we tell you before work starts.
Where Kenmore Ovens Tend to Fail
- Weak Frigidaire-built bake igniter that glows but won't open the valve
- Split bake element or broil element glowing only in sections
- Drifting temperature sensor making the oven run hot or cool
- Discontinued Kenmore control boards blocking repairs on older ovens
