About Amana Oven Repair
Amana sells only a few wall ovens, so nearly every Amana oven we open is the lower half of a freestanding range. That matters for the repair, because access is through the back panel or the oven floor rather than by sliding a unit out of a cabinet. Gas ovens light with a hot-surface bake igniter, electric ones use bake and broil elements, and both rely on a thin sensor probe mounted on the back wall.
On gas models, the bake igniter does two jobs. It gets hot enough to light the burner, and the current it draws is what opens the oven's safety valve. As the igniter ages, it still glows bright orange but no longer draws enough current, so the oven takes many minutes to catch or never lights at all. A long glow with no flame is the classic Amana bake failure, and it is worth mentioning when you book.
Electric Amana ovens usually come down to elements. A burned bake element often shows a visible break or blister. Some lower-end models hide the bake element under the oven floor while others leave it exposed, which changes how the replacement is done. The sensor can drift and push baking off by a noticeable margin, and an oven thermometer on the center rack is a quick way to confirm it before calling.
Basic electronic boards are vulnerable to power surges, and Tampa's summer lightning is hard on them. Self-clean is the other stress test, since it runs the cavity extremely hot, and that is often when a weak element, sensor or board finally gives out. If the oven is already acting up, skip self-clean until it has been checked. With any gas smell, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
We measure the igniter's current draw, test the gas valve, check element and sensor resistance, and verify calibration with a probe. Parts are shared with Whirlpool and generally easy to get. Igniters, elements and sensors are inexpensive repairs worth doing on any Amana. A failed board on an old, basic range is the point where replacing the whole range starts to make more sense, and we will tell you so.
Where Amana Ovens Tend to Fail
- Bake igniter glowing orange but too weak to open the gas valve
- Bake or broil element blistered or broken through
- Oven sensor drifting so bakes run hot or cold
- Control board failing after a surge or a self-clean cycle
