About Amana Dishwasher Repair
Builder-grade kitchens and rental units are where Amana dishwashers live, and the design reflects it: a plastic tub, push-button controls, a wash motor and pump, a separate drain pump, an inlet valve, a heating element and a door latch with switches. Newer models catch food with a manual filter under the lower spray arm that needs regular rinsing. Older ones grind it up with a hard-food disposer instead.
Standing water after the cycle is the complaint we hear most. On filter models, the cause is often just a clogged filter starving the pump. On disposer models, a sliver of glass or a fruit pit can jam the chopper blade. The drain pump itself can also fail. If the sink disposal is new, check that its knockout plug was removed, and look for a drain hose crushed behind the cabinet.
A dishwasher that hums but stays dry has a fill problem. The inlet valve has a fine screen, and on a private well in Odessa, Plant City or Dade City, sediment and iron can plug it. City water causes slower trouble, as mineral scale builds on the screen and in the spray arm holes, leaving white film and gritty dishes. Spray arms should spin freely by hand, and blocked holes can be cleared with a toothpick.
If nothing happens when you press start, look at the door latch. The control will not begin a cycle until the latch switches report the door shut, and those switches wear on a machine that gets opened several times a day. The plastic racks and tines on these basic models also wear, which is mostly cosmetic but can let a rack roller drop off its track and catch on the door.
We test the drain pump, wash motor, inlet valve, latch switches, heating element and control, and look inside the chopper on disposer models. Amana dishwasher parts are shared with Whirlpool and easy to source. Pumps, valves and latches are good repairs. When the wash motor or control fails on an older basic unit, the bill can come close to a new dishwasher, and we tell you that before anything is ordered.
Where Amana Dishwashers Tend to Fail
- Drain pump failed or filter clogged, leaving water in the tub
- Hard-food disposer jammed by glass or a fruit pit
- Inlet valve screen plugged by well sediment or scale
- Door latch switches worn, so the cycle never starts
