About KitchenAid Dishwasher Repair
KitchenAid dishwashers run on the Whirlpool platform, and what sets them apart is the build: stainless tubs, heavier racks, often a third rack and added spray zones. The mechanics are familiar. The base holds a wash motor and pump plus its own drain pump, while an electronic control runs fill, wash and dry. That shared design means many parts and service tests carry over from Whirlpool's other brands.
Around the early 2010s, most models dropped the food grinder in favor of a two-part manual filter. The machines got quieter, but cleaning the filter became the owner's job, and many calls about gritty or cloudy dishes end with a rinsed filter rather than a new part. Mineral scale in Tampa water adds to it, coating spray arm holes and leaving a white film that is easy to mistake for a wash fault.
When something has actually failed, it is often the control board or touch panel, which may go dark or flash a pattern of lights. That blinking is the control reporting a fault code. Wash motors can hum without turning the spray arms, drain pumps jam on glass or seeds, and inlet valves fail. A wire harness running through the door hinge can also break after years of opening and closing.
With power cut, lift out the lower rack, twist the filter free and rinse both pieces under warm water. Spin each spray arm and clear any blocked holes. Look under the sink for a kinked drain hose, and clean the counter air gap if you have one. Use only detergent made for dishwashers; regular dish soap foams heavily and can push suds out past the door seal.
We begin with the service diagnostic many KitchenAid controls offer, reading stored faults, then verify each with a meter. Pump, motor, heater, door switch and inlet valve all get tested, and we clear the keypad interface before we fault the main board. Pumps, motors and valves are good repairs on a stainless-tub machine. Board and motor failing together on an older one deserve a closer look.
Where KitchenAid Dishwashers Tend to Fail
- Clogged two-part filter leaving dishes gritty or cloudy
- Touch panel or control board failing, with flashing light codes
- Wash motor humming without turning the spray arms
- Broken door-hinge wire harness causing intermittent faults
