About KitchenAid Range Repair
KitchenAid builds two quite different kinds of range. Slide-ins are offered as dual-fuel, gas, electric and induction models; they sit flush with the counter and put the controls up front. The commercial-style ranges are 30, 36 or 48 inches wide with heavy grates and high-output sealed burners, and dual-fuel versions pair those burners with an electric convection oven. The weak points differ between them.
A gas KitchenAid oven lights through a hot-surface igniter. As it ages it draws less current, the gas valve hesitates to open, and ignition comes late or fails entirely even though the igniter glows. On commercial-style ranges the cooktop wears its spark modules and burner switches, particularly where boil-overs reach them, and getting to the ignition means removing heavy grates and burners.
Electric and induction slide-ins fail in other places: the bake element, the convection fan, the control board or, on induction, a power board that knocks out one or more zones. Dual-fuel models carry both sets of risks, so we check the gas top and the electric oven as separate systems. Surges during the wet season are rough on the electronics in any of these ranges.
Check the breaker, make sure the gas shutoff behind the range is open, and turn off the control lock if it is on. Wipe and dry the burner caps after spills. Induction ranges need magnetic cookware and clear cooling vents. A gas smell means everyone out, then a call to the gas company or 911. When we arrive, a slide-in may need to be pulled forward, and we protect the counter edge and floor.
Diagnosis includes igniter current draw, gas valve and spark module tests, and checks on elements, sensor, fans and boards. On either family, replacing an igniter, spark module, sensor or element is sensible. Because a commercial-style range costs so much to replace, control and valve repairs usually make sense too. If the range is still in its first year, KitchenAid's own coverage should be your first call.
Where KitchenAid Ranges Tend to Fail
- Hot-surface bake igniter weakening and delaying oven ignition
- Boil-overs shorting a burner switch or spark module
- Electric oven losing its bake element, sensor or convection fan
- Induction power board failure disabling one or more zones
